The Crew har været under udvikling i mere end fire år og startede egentlig som et Xbox 360 og Playstation 3 spil og den lange udviklingstid er ikke et udtryk for problemer i udviklingen, men nærmere fordi at spillet bare er vokset og vokset og det har også vokset sig ud af de nuværende konsollers sko.
Creative Director Julian Gerighty siger i et interview med Digital Trends:
This game started over four years ago. The game hasnt changed, its just taken that long to get it working and working as well as we want it to be working. All of the concepts that we have here are concepts that the team has been working on for the last ten years. The massive open world thats shared with hundreds of other players? Thats something that the team did for Test Drive Unlimited, which was ahead of its time.
For lidt over et år siden, gik det op for Ivory Tower, at deres projekt var så ambitiøst, at den nuværende hardware ikke var nok, så The Crew blev rykket over på de nye konsoller.
It happened about a year and a half ago, where we realized we can push this a little bit further, we can push the personalization of the world, the non-procedural nature of the world, a little bit further if we do it on Xbox One and PS4.
The Crew udkommer til Xbox One, Playstation 4 og PC i løbet af 2014.
